Paul Jackson - Chair Of Trustees


Paul Jackson as a qualified teacher at secondary level gained  first hand experience in the 1980s of the impact of recording and  reviewing achievement on learners and the  learning.  He has substantial experience of working on both teaching and learning innovation and careers and employability initiatives in Higher Education, including in senior roles.  He was substantially involved in the implementation of Personal Development Planning and Career Management skills at the University of Leeds and more recently held the post of Director of the Student Development Service at the University of Leicester.  Currently back working in the Schools sector, he has been a Trustee of the CRA since 2009 and the Chair of the Board since 2010.












Chris Millson- Vice Chair of Trustees
Online Training Manager, University of York

Chris is the online training manager for the careers service at the University of York. He manages and develops resources to support students in developing their employability. Chris has experience in developing both technology and education, but believes that the two should ideally not be separated! Chris has worked on York's Employability Tutorial since development began in Spring 2011, and is working on development of the postgraduate researcher version.









Mark Atlay - Trustee 
Director of Teaching and Learning, University of Bedfordshire

Mark oversees the work of the Centre for Learning Excellence and the structures and processes in place to support learning and teaching across the University including the professional development of academic staff, the sue of technology to enhance learning and curriculum design. He is also the Chair of SEEC and joint Chair of UK Credit Forum.





Joan Cartledge - Trustee 
Development and Quality Enhancement Consultant, University of Birmingham


Joan's role as a Development and Quality Enhancement Consultant and the University of Birmingham involves developing e-learning and skills development resources for students and staff alongside teaching skills modules and acting as academic advisor to the Personal Skills Award at the University. As employability grows in importance for the University I am increasingly becoming involved in working with academics and teaching skills development and reflective practice as we seek to embed employability in the curriculum. I also have recently taken on the role of managing quality enhancement for the Careers Network here at the University. In my spare time I am involved in the Crossway Project as a volunteer debt consultant running money management courses for community groups and in schools alongside providing debt advice.





Mark Darley - Trustee 
Group HR Manager (Scotland and Northern Ireland) Enterprise Rent-A-Car

Mark is Group HR Manager (Scotland and Northern Ireland) at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, he loves being part of the journey that graduates take, from the initial meeting right through to congratulating them on their first branch manager appointment. To Mark being involved in the evolution of his organisation’s future talent and management is extremely satisfying. Through his role he is constantly learning new business skills and working on new and exciting projects. When Mark was looking for a career, he wanted a role where he would be able to work with the best people in the industry allowing him to progress quickly and he believes that enterprise has offered him this opportunity excelling this career.




Carol Higgison - Trustee
Senior Adviser on e-learning, University of Bradford

Carol is the Senior Adviser on E-Learning at the University of Bradford. She advises the University on strategy in relation to e-learning and promotes the development of policy and effective practice in the application of e-learning. Her main focus is enhancing students learning by working collaboratively with academic departments and schools in supporting staff in the use of information and communication technologies in teaching, learning and assessment and evaluating these innovations. Current areas of development include computer assisted assessment, e-portfolios, accessibility of e-learning, plagiarism detection, streaming media and online support for distance and flexible learning. On the academic side, Carol contributes to the development and delivery of the Post Graduate Certificate/ MEd in HE Practice and the integrated staff development programme, including development of the online courses for staff development, and co-supervises a PhD student. Carol sits on a variety of University Committees including University Senate.





Stephen Isherwood - Trustee
Chief Executive of AGR

Stephen was appointed Chief Executive of AGR in June 2013 following six years  as Head of Graduate Recruitment UK & Ireland at Ernst & Young, one of the largest recruiters of graduates in the UK. Stephen started his career at Coopers & Lybrand recruiting experienced in management consultants before moving into graduate recruitment when Coopers merged with Price Waterhouse to form PwC. After PwC he lead the graduate recruitment and developing programme at Safeway before working in the public sector where he developed and managed a number of careers related programmes. At Ernst & Young, Stephen instigated the project that led to a switch from competency based recruitment to a 'Strengths' based methodology. In addition to his current role Stephen is a member of the Burgess Report Implementation Committee.





Pauline Kneale - Trustee
Pro Vice- Chancellor, Teaching & Learning, PedRIO & Educational Development, University of Plymouth

Pauline started her career as an undergraduate geographer at University College London, moving to Bristol as a PHD student and stayed as a temporary lecturer for a year before migrating to Environmental Sciences at Trinity College Dublin, and then via Kingston, to Geography at the University of Leeds in 1985. Pauline moved to the University of Plymouth in autumn 2009 as Director, The Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and a professor in The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. In 2010 I took up the PVC post, and shortly afterwards the Directorship of the Pedagogic Research Institute and Observatory (PedRIO).
Early interest research in slopes, hydrology and mires have slowly been dominated by moving to focus on learning, teaching and enterprise issues with particular emphasis on developing innovative teaching and pedagogical research, and encouraging colleagues to engage in Academy Senior teaching Fellowship in the first round in 2007.
As ProDean Learning and Teaching for the Faculty of Environment at the University of Leeds, (2002-8) which included the 3 GEES disciplines and Transport Studies, Pauline was responsible for all aspects of learning and teaching quality assurance, promoting and enhancing student learning and the student experience. In parallel to this role, Pauline was Director of the Leeds White Rose Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning of Enterprise (2005-2010). This project worked with colleagues in Leeds, Sheffield and York to embed enterprise education across the curricula of all disciplines, and with students to develop their practical enterprise skills. As part of this project Pauline developed a suite of enterprise elective modules for undergraduates, developed materials for medical students, and created a Masters module for Dental students. WRCETLE- related projects centres on embedding enterprise in Leeds, working with medical colleagues in South Africa, and with Information Scientists in Ethiopia. Other research projects include exploring pedagogy issues around intrapreneurship, Masters level teaching and student skills agenda.




Francine Lindley - Trustee

After graduating in hotel management, Francine joined a graduate management training programme with Allied Breweries working in hotels around the country.  After a career change, Francine worked in HR, training and development and FE teaching in the public, voluntary and private sectors prior to joining the University of Sheffield in 1991.  Working initially in the BioSciences as an enterprise consultant under the University’s Enterprise in Higher Education (EHE) initiative,  Francine  moved into  the University’s newly established Regional Office, taking up the post of Skills Development Co- ordinator, where she managed a ‘live project’ programme for students working  in local SMEs.

Since joining the university careers service some 15 years ago, Francine has undertaken a number of project management roles; developing employability programmes for undergraduate/ post graduate students and contract research staff, managing Graduate Link (recruiting students into local SMEs) during its ERDF funded phase, developing and implementing PDP across the university and latterly establishing and leading the Sheffield Graduate Award, which led to an early recognition of the advantages and benefits of adopting the HEAR, where she has continuing involvement in its development at Sheffield.






























Susan Riddell- Trustee

Sue is Head of Department for Nursing & Applied Clinical Studies at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) and has been working there for 15 years in a variety of posts.

Originally Sue trained as a nurse and entered nurse education in the 1980’s before nurse education itself moved into Higher Education, taking her with it!  Within nurse education she has worked in Kent, Essex and Aberdeen before returning to Kent in 1997 since which time she has been employed at CCCU.  Whilst in Aberdeen she completed a Masters in Education (HE) at the University.

Originally a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing, Sue has worked as a Teaching Fellow with responsibility for introducing PDP across the institution and as the Learning & Teaching co-ordinator for the Faculty of Health & Social Care.  It was in the Teaching Fellow role that she first became involved with the CRA and is a veteran of the Residentials each year.  Sue also led a project within the University which formed part of the CRAs National Action Research Network.  This project concerned the role of the personal tutor in the students’ Personal Development Planning.

Currently within the Interprofessional Undergraduate programme at CCCU Sue has been instrumental in the introduction first of the concept of PDP into the programme in 2009 and then more recently the incorporation of an e-portfolio.  In particular this an aspect of key significance to Health & Social Care professionals who are likely to be required to produce regular evidence of their CPD in order to maintain registration with a governing body eg Nursing and Midwifery Council once they have qualified.

John Jackson, Bangor University

John is the Manager of the Bangor Employability Award scheme in the Careers & Employability Service at Bangor University, North Wales.

After returning to university as a mature student he was elected president of Bangor Students’ Union in 2008 and served two terms. He successfully applied for the job of running Bangor University’s new employability scheme in 2010, drawing upon his SU experiences and his awareness of the need to recognise HE students’ achievement, alongside the need for planning and reflection.

John’s governance history includes having sat on the Council of Bangor University, chaired the board of directors of the SU’s commercial services company, and chaired the boards of trustees of both its parent charity company and Bangor Students’ Union itself; he is currently a local governor of a primary school in North Wales, and an active member of HEA Wales' Future Directions initiative.




Alastair Robertson, University of Abertay

Dr Alastair Robertson is the Director of Teaching and Learning Enhancement at the Abertay University with responsibility for overseeing the development and successful implementation of the institution’s Teaching and Learning Enhancement strategy and related plans. Prior to his recent appointment at Abertay, Alastair worked for a number of years supporting quality enhancement at the national level through positions at the Higher Education Academy (2005-13) and QAA Scotland (2003-05). Although his role is wide ranging in terms of enhancing quality and the student experience, he has particular interests in the areas of strategic change, graduate employability and personal development. He has worked with the CRA since 2003 on a range of initiatives at a national level around PDP and, more recently, participated in CRA’s excellent HEAR Academy, as chair of Abertay’s HEAR working group. His background is in scientific research (solid state inorganic chemistry) and he previously held positions at the Universities of Aberdeen and St Andrews. Outside of work he has a busy family life and a passion for the outdoors, whatever the season!
